Do-It-Yourself Smart Feed®: A Comprehensive Foundation for Specialized Diets

Do I need to add a mineral mix to 'DIY Smart Feed'?

Not necessarily. When formulating your own diet, it's crucial to remember that all raw materials naturally
contain minerals, some of which may be present in significant amounts. For instance, canola meal typically contains 1mg of selenium per kg, 100mg of zinc per kg, and has a calcium/phosphorus ratio of 0.35:1.

It's essential to ensure a balanced diet for your horse when preparing a home ration.
Only qualified professionals should provide a diet analysis report and balance your horse's homemade ration.

Calcium & Phosphorus: Homemade formulas often result in an imbalanced ratio of calcium and phosphorus,
which can affect your horse's nutrient uptake. The additional calcium and phosphorus in 'DIY Smart Feed' will
support horses and ponies with limited access to quality pasture, contributing to the maintenance of bones, joints, and overall health. In some cases, it might be necessary to increase calcium and/or phosphorus to meet elevated demands, such as during late pregnancy, lactation, or when grazing high Kikuyu pastures. If you're unsure whether your homemade ration meets these requirements, contact us for professional assistance and diet planning.

Benefits of Smart Feeds®:

  • Horses and ponies are more content when Smart Feed® is part of their daily diet.

  • Supports respiratory function as part of daily diet, reducing the impact of dry cough and dust irritation.

  • If there are concerns about your horse's health or performance, consider a blood analysis.

  • A feed aid for horses and ponies with common feed-related gastrointestinal tract or hind-gut irritation.

  • Safe for all sizes, ages, and breeds, including those at risk of colic, ulcers, airway infections, laminitis,
Cushing's disease and increased metabolic heat load.

  • Supports healthy rehydration when pasture intake is low or absent, particularly in warmer weather.

  • Provides a safer foundation for a weight control program.

Activate with Water Before Feeding

Preparation Instructions:

  • Submerge in clean water and leave to activate for 10 minutes or longer.

  • Monitor soaking process to prevent fermentation.

  • Use of bore water and humid conditions will increase risk of feed fermentation. Use the recommended soak time provided.

  • If mistakenly fed dry, there is no cause for concern.
